Music history has been made! Missy Elliott’s groundbreaking track, “Get Ur Freak On,” has officially been crowned the No. 1 Greatest Song of the 21st Century So Far by Rolling Stone!

The Reign of "Get Ur Freak On"

Rolling Stone lauded the 2001 classic, stating, “…It was a challenge, a dare, the sound of Miss E and Timbaland defying everyone else to keep up with the future or get left behind.” Even two decades later, the iconic track, featured on the rapper’s third studio album, Miss E… So Addictive, still "sounds like the future — everything vibrant and inventive and cool about 21st-century pop is in here somewhere.”

The track’s initial impact was huge, landing at number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The success carried over to the album itself: Miss E… So Addictive debuted at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling an impressive 250,000 copies in its first week, and has since been certified platinum by the RIAA. A testament to its brilliance, “Get Ur Freak On” also earned Missy a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 44th Grammy Awards in 2002.

Seven-Year Legal Battle Concluded

In other major news for the Hip-Hop icon, Missy Elliott has closed a long-running chapter in her legal history! In August, just as jury selection was set to begin in a Philadelphia courtroom, she and producer Terry Williams reached an agreement to settle their dispute, officially ending the seven-year-long lawsuit.

The conflict stemmed from Williams' claims of helping to write four tracks for Elliott’s group Sista’s 1994 project, 4 All the Sistas Around Da World, and then being denied the proper credit and payment when Elliott later published the material. Williams had also attempted to link his argument to Aaliyah’s 1996 single “Heartbroken,” but this was ultimately dismissed in August 2024 by U.S. District Judge Nitza Quiñones Alejandro due to the excessive time that had passed
